Are You Ever Too Old to Play? 5 October Highlights at Poole Museum
Summer might be over, but playtime doesn’t have to be. There’s a common misconception that museums are quiet, dusty buildings full of old artefacts. At Poole Museum, we’re changing that narrative.
A recent study by the National Institute for Play revealed that 43% of Brits lose touch with their playful side by age 29. We think that’s pretty sad, especially as it’s been proven to improve brain function, reduce stress and improve relationships.
This October, we are officially inviting you to come and play, whether you’re 5 or 95. From historic trails to hands-on art, your inner child can thank us later.

1. Step into the vibrant world of Jason Wilsher-Mills
Artist Jason Wilsher-Mills is bringing humor, mischief, and bright colors to our gallery. His oversized sculptures and paintings celebrate disability and working-class heritage.
Don't Miss this striking masthead created especially for Poole Museum by Jason. He made it to celebrate the people who guide and support us through life’s rough seas: carers. Donate to help us keep it at the museum for good.

2. Explore AUB’s 'Being a Boy' exhibition
Museums tell stories, but whose voices are missing? Fresh from being displayed in Parliament, this Arts University Bournemouth (AUB) exhibition explores modern masculinity, boyhood, and gender through the eyes of young men.
3. Get creative at a mythical clay workshop
Led by Debbie from Creative Clay for All, this hands-on workshop lets aspiring artists and families sculpt their very own sea monsters and mermaids.

4. Let little ones loose at Wiggles & Giggles
Looking for things to do with under-5s in tow? Our music and movement class is a brilliant riot of creativity for toddlers (and a well-earned break for parents).
5. Uncover local history with the Poole Museum Society
Founded in 1973, this passionate group of history buffs hosts brilliant public talks.

Behind the scenes: volunteer spotlight on Rosemary
Our museum wouldn't run without our amazing community. This month, we caught up with volunteer Rosemary to get her insider secrets:
The ultimate mantelpiece object:
"The historic log boat. It has an amazing history, it would be an incredible conversation starter!" (We hope Rosemary has a big enough mantelpiece.)
The best part of volunteering:
"Meeting people from all over the world. They want to know about our history in Poole, and I love hearing theirs."
The hidden gem visitors miss:
"The massive narwhal tusk in the Setting Sail Gallery. It's displayed incredibly cleverly, but people often walk right past it."
Want to join Rosemary's team?

Whether you want to follow our historic trails, try your hand at brass rubbing, or view the ruins of an uncovered Iron Age shipwreck, it’s your move next. Come along, bring a friend, or just have a nose around. Because joy, curiosity, and connection shouldn’t stop just because we have a few more greys.
