Un/Common People: Folk Culture in Wessex
Get ready to explore the vibrant, unexpected, and wonderfully creative world of folk culture as Un/Common People arrives in our Co:Lab Gallery!
This major touring exhibition celebrates the rich traditions, seasonal customs, and everyday creativity of Wessex, past and present. From handcrafted sweetheart pin cushions made by WWI veterans to a rare ship made entirely of straw (yes, really!) linked to Poole’s maritime heritage, every object tells a story of community, identity, and imagination.
Expect over 100 fascinating objects, immersive films, and a beautifully illustrated folk song and story map - all capturing the spirit of Wessex through the seasons.
Curated by the Museum of British Folklore and Wessex Museums, the exhibition redefines what it means to be a “commoner” - showcasing how folk culture has been reimagined and enriched by generations of makers, storytellers, and celebrators.
Here in Poole, we’ve added our own twist. Alongside the touring collection, we’re spotlighting Diwali, one of the joyful events celebrated locally, showing how folk traditions continue to evolve and reflect the diverse communities that call Wessex home.
Watch five beautiful short films capturing seasonal folk customs across Wessex, brought to life by Create Studios. Enjoy our vibrant Diwali film below, showcasing how the festival lit up Poole, then click here to watch the full collection (opens in a new tab).
