Textural Form IAtmospheric Colour I History

A collaborative exhibition by David Pointer & Kathryn Thomas

23 May - 7 June 2026

Step into a conversation between form and colour, earth and light.

Textural Form I Atmospheric Colour I History is an immersive meeting of ceramic sculpture and painting, inspired by shifting horizons and luminous coastal light, with two Poole-based artists coming together in the beautifully restored Scaplen’s Court and Garden.

Forming part of Dorset Art Week, this exhibition responds to the character, textures, and atmosphere of the venue itself, and provides a rare chance to experience an exciting local collaboration. Expect history, craftsmanship, and contemporary creativity to meet in surprising and beautiful ways.

David Pointer

David Pointer’s sculptural ceramics grow directly from Dorset’s dramatic landscape, where rolling hills tumble towards a rugged coastline. His hand-built forms reflect the raw energy of this environment and the subtle dialogue between land, sea, and sky.

Working from his Poole studio, each piece is individually designed and made using traditional pinch, coil, and slab techniques with stoneware clays, giving every object its own quiet strength and presence.

“My sculptural ceramics are inspired by the rugged beauty of Dorset, where rolling hills meet dramatic coastline.”

David Pointer, 2026

Kathryn Thomas

For over 35 years, Kathryn Thomas’s paintings have engaged viewers with an enigmatic and intriguing power. Work that evokes atmosphere, emotion, and fleeting glimpses of natural beauty, conveying both energy and an underlying sense of force.

She works with the finest handmade oil paints, using those produced by Michael Harding, whose materials support the depth, richness, and luminosity characteristic of her practice layered on Berge linen.

“Kathryn’s ‘waves’ of colour are not abstractions, they are timeless records of the miraculous space in which we float.”

Jerry Hicks, RWA, MBE (1928–2014)
