The Project
Re-discovering Poole’s Maritime Heritage
This exciting project means working with volunteers, residents and the local community to co-create three brand-new maritime galleries at Poole Museum. We’ll also be delivering a fresh programme of activities, learning and events, conserving the medieval Wool Hall, moving our Local History Centre into the heart of the museum, and updating some of our other important spaces and facilities.
Supported by National Lottery Heritage Fund
We are pleased to have been awarded an initial grant of £352,000 by the National Lottery Heritage Fund (NLHF) to develop future plans for our museum. This funding has allowed us to carry out creative consultation and collaboration with wide range of visitors, residents, partners and community groups, as well as enabling us to work with a team of professional architects and exhibition designers. Later in 2021 we will be applying for a second, full grant deliver our plans.
Development activities so far…
During 2020, the Our Museum Project team carried out a range of different creative consultation and collaboration events and activities with Poole residents, volunteers and community groups.
Activities included a 3 month long ‘Project Lab’ asking for visitor ideas about the new galleries and activities at Poole Museum and ‘Gallery Shakeups’ which invited museum staff, volunteers, community groups and members of the public to reflect on the current maritime displays at the museum. We also ran ‘Re-imagining the Museum’ workshops exploring collections, design and experience, held an academic roundtable on maritime museums and worked with artists to develop creative responses to Poole Quay and Harbour. Finally, we had the chance to collaborate with students from both Bournemouth University and Arts University Bournemouth, developing ideas for our exhibitions and displays and a brand new logo for the project.
