Poole’s Admiralty Court Book is full of references to the need to conserve fish stocks. The size of the mesh of fishing nets was regulated to allow small fish to escape.

In 1691 Mr Burt was named as “having an illegal net, and lending it to Mr Williams and fishing in the Liberty of the Town to the great destruction of the small fish”.
