Poole’s overseas trade led to many strange and exotic items being landed in the port. In February 1760 Poole Custom officers reported to their superiors that Robert Durrell, master of the ship George, had brought back from Newfoundland “2 white Bear Skins”.
Polar bears are still regular visitors to Newfoundland. They are now a protected species.
