The Poole archives contain an account in 1573 of expenses relating to the town gallows:
For timber for the gallows and for making and setting them up 8 shillings and 2 pence
For the hangman’s reward 6 shillings and 8 pence
To Peter Whiffen for irons 3 shillings and 4 pence
To the porters for guarding the prisoners 1 shilling and 4 pence
Note: The irons were probably leg restraints to stop the prisoners escaping.
