In 1761 a problem arose with the appointment of the Sheriff of Poole. William Milner had been elected as Sheriff for the next year. Unfortunately, he was a prisoner in the Fleet Prison in London and could not attend his swearing in at the Guildhall. The Corporation hastily elected Joseph Skutt as his replacement.
The Fleet prison usually housed debtors.
William Milner reappears in the Mayor’s Accounts of 1768 where there were “sundry expences… attending the retaking of William Milner then a prisoner for a very considerable sum who made his escape from the Prison of Poole”.
