Why wait until December 25th to celebrate this month? Today is Monkey Day (also known as World Monkey Day and International Monkey Day), a day to celebrate all things simian.
To celebrate such a prestigious event, we have selected one of our pieces of Poole Pottery.
The ‘Three Wise Monkeys’ bookend was designed by Hugh Llewellyn, the headmaster of the Poole Borough School of Art, and glazed by Ernest Banten. This design was produced between 1922 and 1930 by the then Carter, Stabler and Adams. The piece is 18.5 cm tall and was press moulded in buff stoneware clay. A later version was issued in slip cast terracotta stoneware.
Similar bookends produced at the time were the Ship bookends, the Springbok bookends, the Knight bookends and the Elephant Bookends by Harold Brownsword, our first featured objects back in July.
Now, go bananas and show us your favourite monkey (or simian) objects from home…
