A little bit of ‘Mo’ for Movember from the museum collection this week. This handsome moustached chap features in an oil on panel painting by artist Bernard F Gribble. It is thought to be a self-portrait.
Bernard F Gribble (1872-1962) moved to Springfield Crescent in Parkstone in the early 1900s. Trained at the South Kensington Art School, and under the sculptor Albert Toft, Gribble exhibited regularly at both the Royal Academy and the Paris Salon. Once resident in Dorset he became a member of the Poole and East Dorset Art Society. Other members included the artists Henry Lamb and Augustus John.
Gribble is perhaps best known for his dramatic historic maritime scenes. Following his death, a large collection of Gribble’s paintings, drawings and prints, were donated to Poole Museum by his wife.
Movember is an annual event that aims to raise awareness of men’s health issues by encouraging the growing of moustaches during the month of November. The Movember charity supports men’s health projects worldwide.
