This weeks’ featured museum object is one never to forget: a rather handsome pair of elephant shaped bookends.

Designed by Harold Brownsword, these slip cast earthenware bookends were produced by Poole pottery company Carter Stabler Adams in the late 1920s.

Harold Brownsword (1885-1961) was a Staffordshire born sculptor who studied at the Hanley School of Art and then at the Royal Academy of Art in London from 1908-1913. He is perhaps best known for his war memorials.

Brownsword was one of several guest designers invited to contribute to Carter Stabler Adams’ growing design books during the 1920s and 30s.
