‘Welcome to Poole’ tile panel, 1950s
This panel was made by the company Carter & Co. of Poole, part of which later became known as Poole Pottery. From the late 19th century until the 1960s the company produced tiles and architectural products for use in buildings in many parts of the world. A number of these panels, designed by Arthur Nickols, were located on roads entering Poole and marked the borough boundary. The design shows X-class sailing boats racing in Poole Harbour.
